Portraits of Shruti Ganguly in Oslo, Norway

It was an honor to photograph Shruti Ganguly, a filmmaker, writer, and activist whose work spans the globe. From New York City to Oslo, Los Angeles to India, Shruti brings a bold and deeply human perspective to every project she touches.

Her films have premiered at major festivals including Venice, Sundance, and Tribeca. This past Oscars, she was seen on the red carpet with #Ceasefire scrolled on her arm, risking her career, and bringing the Gaza protests outside, inside. A passionate advocate for social and political change, more recently, she has been campaigning door to door for NYC Assemblymember and socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

We personally have marched together for Gaza and at the Oslo Pride Parade, and I continue to be inspired by her commitment to justice.

In classic filmmaker fashion, we had planned to shoot in my Oslo studio, but when schedules shifted as they are prone to due in the world of international filmmaking, I came to her home in Oslo that evening instead. Surrounded by her artwork, books, and creative energy, and beagle, Caspian, we made portraits for Marie Claire magazine that feel both intimate and cinematic.

My favorite image might be the one where she is resting - a rare moment of stillness for someone who rarely slows down.
